2013 Human Resource and Employment Law Conference

1000

More than 75 human resource professionals representing various businesses and industries from around the region attended the Manufacturer & Business Association’s (MBA) first annual Human Resource and Employment Law Conference on October 11 at the MBA Conference Center in Erie. The day was full of interactive sessions, thought-provoking information and numerous networking opportunities.

Attendees heard from three highly acclaimed keynote speakers who literally wrote the book on leadership and people management strategies. Marty Clarke, author of Leadership Landmines, delivered a wickedly funny presentation identifying some specific behaviors that are crippling leader’s ability to make good decisions and the strategies to overcome them.

Jim Roddy, author of Hire Like You Just Beat Cancer and a cancer survivor himself, explained the best practices for hiring and retention to make sure you have and keep the best people working for you.

Jay Hawreluk, author of Unraveling the Mystery of People and creator of the AcuMax Index Survey, delivered a powerful message on learning how to effectively communicate and work with others by recognizing each person’s individual wiring.

Attendees also received the latest updates on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act from Buck Consultants as well as changes in employment law from the MBA’s Labor and Employment counsel Tammy Lamary-Toman.

The day ended with several giveaways from event sponsors — ECCA Payroll and Business Solutions, Erie Times-News and GoErie.com, Nationwide Insurance and Securian (through Waddell & Reed), Tri-Cor Employment Screening, Loesel-Schaaf Insurance Agency — while Donna Rekitt of Maple Donuts won the Association’s grand prize gift basket, which included a Kindle Fire HD, golf shirts and $250 gift certificate toward MBA HR services.

Next year’s conference is set for Friday, October 10, 2014.
