ERIE – Plastikos Inc., a medical injection molder, focusing on manufacturing extremely small, tight-tolerance components has recently completed a major facility renovation and reinvestment effort. The facility upgrades, which began earlier this summer, consists of 10 new injection molding machine installments, renovated office space, modernized conference and meeting rooms, and upgraded employee training areas.

Philip Katen, president of Plastikos, commented: “We allocated nearly $2 million in total for this renovation project in addition to the prior investments that we previously made in our medical facility. 2016 has been an extremely busy year with the amount of facility upgrades and reinvestment efforts that we completed, while maintaining our day-to-day commitments to our customers.”

Phase I of the renovation project focused on a number of facility enhancements and upgrades, as mentioned above. Moreover, the company’s training, conference, and meeting rooms have been completely revamped and upgraded with the latest technology in order to better conduct monthly meetings, employee training sessions, customer presentations, etc.

Phase II of the project consisted of replacing 10 of Plastikos’ legacy hydraulic molding machines with all-new high-speed electric injection molding machines, integrated with robotic systems. The first six new presses will go on-line this fall. From there, four additional new molding machines will arrive later this Winter.

“These investments were really two-fold: We need to account and to prepare for strategic employee growth in the years to come. And, the machine replacement effort will provide us with additional capacity and enhanced capabilities that brand new high-speed molding machines afford,” Katen added. “We felt this year was perfect timing to proactively tackle both efforts.”

By 2017, Plastikos will have successfully converted all 35 molding machines in their fleet to high-speed, all-electric equipment.
