ERIE — The future continues to look bright at Micro Mold & Plastikos, as the company announced its latest milestone: Plastikos’ major medical expansion, which was completed in the summer of 2015 and includes more 17,000 square feet of additional state-of-the-art space.

To celebrate, the companies are hosting a private, invitational open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, November 14 for members of the Plastikos & Micro Mold family, friends, customers and supporters. According to the company representatives, “This is a huge milestone for both companies and we want to share the event with our guests so that they can see first-hand the technology and advanced capabilities that are required to produce a finished plastic medical part in our newly completed ISO 7 cleanroom.”

Micro Mold & Plastikos invested $2 million in brand new medical injection molding machines, robotics, and other supporting auxiliary equipment and purchases during 2015 to outfit Plastikos’ new Medical Division.

At the heart of our medical expansion is an ISO 7 (Class 10,000) injection molding cleanroom that is designed to accommodate eight brand medical molding machines. Plastikos’ medical expansion also includes a separate ISO 7 assembly and packaging lab, as well as corresponding medical production support departments (maintenance, toolroom, quality, general office and meeting room space).

Philip Katen, president of Plastikos commented: “We continue to see a growing need from our medical customer base to take on more advanced manufacturing and component assembly work that expands beyond our precision tool making and scientific injection molding service offerings. And we are excited to invite all members of the Plastikos & Micro Mold Team, their family and friends, our customers, and key suppliers to our ribbon-cutting and open house celebration. Our Medical Expansion showcases the advanced engineering, technology and automation that support precision medical manufacturing in the 21st century.”

Over the last year, Plastikos also invested more than $500,000 in automation and robotic centers throughout the facility. “We are continuing to look at ways to automate our manufacturing-related process such as: packaging, inspection, raw material & finished product handling, and so on. This new automated manufacturing cell should open the door to other exciting opportunities,” said Plastikos’ Manufacturing Manager Rob Cooney. “We will continue to move forward and grow as we experience strong customer demands to diversify into new materials, technology, and manufacturing capability. Demands are always changing, and we are ready to tackle new opportunities that come our way.”
