Ohio/Pennsylvania National Apprenticeship Week

891

The week of November 2, 2015 is National Apprenticeship Week. The Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network will be celebrating this national event by helping to raise awareness of the value of apprenticeships.

National Apprenticeship Week is focused on highlighting the well-paying careers in manufacturing and how interested students and adults can access apprenticeship programs or trainings to gain the skills they need for manufacturing careers.

The Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network spans 14 counties along the Ohio and Pennsylvania border. These counties include Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, Geauga and Ashtabula in Ohio, as well as Mercer, Lawrence, Erie, Crawford, Venango, Clarion, Warren, and Forest in Pennsylvania.

This region has 2,833 manufacturing openings annually. In addition 6,686 adults over age 55 will retire from the industry within the next 10 years. Manufacturing employees are needed across these 14 counties. The United States Department of Labor recognized this need and awarded the Network a $3 million grant focused on building local manufacturing apprenticeship programs over the next five years.

Apprenticeship is an “earn and learn” training model that combines work-based learning with related classroom instruction using the highest industry standards. Companies that offer Apprenticeship programs can diversify their workforce, improve productivity and profitability, standardize training, reduce turnover, and receive tax credits and more.

The U.S. currently has approximately 375,000 apprentices working with more than 150,000 employers. Last year, President Obama established a goal of doubling the number of Apprenticeships within five years. The inaugural National Apprenticeship Week is one of several initiatives helping achieve that goal.
